The Design Research Institute, based at RMIT University in Melbourne, is a multi-disciplinary facility that offers a unique combination of applied and pure research across design disciplines not traditionally associated with each other. The visual identity system therefore had to operate outside of any suggestion of any one particular design field. The earlier incarnation, Design Institute, was then altered to the Design Research Institute.
