What is an internship and tasks does the intern do?
An internship offers an insight into the workings of a design studio through direct experience. It involves doing a very wide variety of tasks (some being fun, others less so) and will depend on the skills the intern has as well as the projects being undertaken at that time. Given the nature of the studio, it is likely that the intern will be working on both client and studio-initiated projects. Ideally an intern would contribute to the working culture of the studio. The intern is actively encouraged to use the unique studio library for research and further learning in the field of typography.
How do I apply?
The application process involves the submission of an electronic portfolio (pdf) and/or a link to a portfolio site. Competition for the internship position is very strong. Those shortlisted are then interviewed in person or by skype and the final candidate (1) chosen as an intern for that specific period. How long are the internships for?
Studio internships are run for a period of eight (8) weeks.
It is therefore not suitable for current students during the academic calendar.
What are the selection criteria ?
Essential
/ A passion for typography
/ An interest in graphic design culture and history
/ Fluency in Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
/ Basic print production skills
/ Fluency in English
Preferred
/ A working knowledge of CMS (WordPress templates etc)
/Familiarity in Fontlab
/Photographic and/or film-making skills
Ideal
/ An advanced knowledge of coding (PHP, SQL etc)
/ Film/Music software editing skills
/ Fluency in Fontlab
What personality traits are suitable?
/ Good social and verbal communication skills (a good sense of humour is handy too)
/ Life experience to put everything into a bigger perspective
/ A fondness for music
/ Humility
What are the hours?
9.30am –5.30pm with a lunchtime of 30 minutes (although this is flexible).
Is the internship paid?
Yes, Interns are paid $150 (AUD) per week plus any reasonable travel expenses.
