Recital Sans

designer Stephen Banham precedent Eric Sans Digitisation Niels Oeltjen

Commissioned by the Melbourne Recital Centre, Recital Sans is a unicase typeface based around the musical concept of ‘variations on a theme’. Each letter has four such variations, mixing both uppercase and lowercase forms with harmonious stroke widths.

An interpretation of a sketch by English typographer Eric Gill (1882–1940) in his 1936 manifesto Essay on Typography, the typeface Recital Sans was drawn from the ground-up and appeared across a variety of communications for the Melbourne Recital Centre.
