The original application – as a timeline to commemorate the 150 years
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the beloved Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) a year-long program of events rolls out. The typography for the event is suitably elegant yet reductive, featuring a strong verticality in the ‘T’ form engineered to accommodate the impressive alumni listing. It is built for clear legibility and recognition across long distances, given the clean sight lines of St.Kilda Road and Swanston Street.
Letterbox is a graphic design studio in Melbourne that specialise in custom type design to create a unique brand identity for distinctiveness and recognition. The studio cross-pollinates client-commissioned projects (identity, signage, publications, custom fonts) and studio-commissioned projects (independent publishing, typeface design, lectures, forums, tours and exhibitions). We embrace research and curiosity in all our projects.
Letterbox began life in a corner milk-bar in Northcote in 1991. Three years later it moved into Carlow House, one of the key creative buildings in the then-fledgling artist community of Flinders Lane, Melbourne. The studio remained there for 14 years before moving to larger studios in the renown Hardwick Building. It now occupies a custom-designed studio in Brunswick.
Over the years our design team has included Endré Berentzen, Wendy Ellerton, Tom Hall, Lan Huang, Sam Hughes, Claire Ghyzel, Daniel Lindh, Tim Mang, Nina Mujdzic, Niels Oeltjen, Nicola Schwandner and Heather Walker – as well as many interns. These have come from an assortment of places – Germany, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, France and, yes, even Melbourne.
