Off The Grid

design Letterbox | curator Lachlan MacDowall | venue City Gallery, Melbourne

Over twenty years ago, the anonymous French street artist known as Invader visited Melbourne and secretly installed twenty-five tile mosaics across the centre of the city.

Unlike most street art of the period, many of invader’s artworks are still intact. Off The Grid explores the legacy of his visit and the recurring grid motif in Melbourne street art, referencing both the city’s colonial streetscape (the ‘Hoddle Grid’) and the pixelated screens of digital culture.
